Portable Cabins: What does it mean to be portable? The term portable is defined as something that easily moved or transported, and item that is a lighter, smaller version than usual. By definition, anything can be made portable. Even the largest parts of our lives, our homes. Many people choose to live in a portable cabin for a multitude of reasons. One being the cost itself of the property. These days, purchasing a plot of land is a fraction of the cost compared to buying a home and the land it sits on. When you buy the land you’ll pay, for some, less than a third the cost of purchasing a brand new or “used” home. So, the more cost effective options would be to purchase the plot of land by itself. But, that leaves you with the simple question of, where are we going to live? The answer is simple, a portable home.

In the forest with the wildlife and the beauty of nature seems to be my first choice. Or, you live in an apartment with only two bedrooms and one bathroom. Options of Portable Cabins

Portable cabins, like homes, come with all sorts of fun options. One main option is who makes the cabin. With hundreds of companies all competing for your business, there is no shortage of choices. From Amish made fabrications to top the of the line, state of the art masterpieces created in a warehouse of a multi-million-dollar conglomerate. But, there are some limitations you need to keep in mind while choosing even who to go with to make your future home or home away from home.

Amish built products are beautiful productions with an old world charm and new world functionality. The Amish take pride in creating works of art that can’t, fully, be mass produced without losing out on the human touch. The human factor and creations are what give the Amish such wonderful praise about their products. Yet, with Amish made products there are some things that should be taken into consideration like timing. Unless you are choosing a portable cabin that has already been made and assembled, you are going to be waiting for this creation to come to life. That doesn’t mean it’s going to take a life time to build, but it does mean take into consideration that these wonderful people are creating your new work of art from scratch with their bare hands. So, it may take a small time longer than would be expected from a large warehouse operation with state of art equipment. Most Amish built portable cabins can come several different ways. With the beauty, functionality, and care that comes from these creations, there is only one thing you have to truly ask yourself, are you a do it yourselfer? Why do you need to know if you are or not? The answer is simply this. Amish built cabins can come pre-fabricated or you can purchase a kit.

Just as it sounds, the pre-fabricated establishments are fully put together and are ready to be placed on your base. The kit, however, is just that. A delivery of parts and pieces for you or your contractor to piece together. Also, some companies give you the option of “deluxe” cabins or “basic” cabins. A deluxe cabin is a cabin the is fully assembled and ready with interior walls, insulation, interior/exterior doors, windows, flooring, bathroom, kitchen/bathroom cabinetry, loft and electrical wiring. The basic cabin is just the opposite. The basic cabin is a shell, the exterior of the cabin is ready, sealed, and functioning. While the inside is for the consumer who wants to do it yourself.

If you choose not to go the Amish way, that’s okay. You have the choice to go to a specific location and see what the new world has to offer. With many companies stretching all over the world, you should be able to easily find the portable cabin you want almost anywhere. All you have to do is open Google or Bing and type in “portable cabins for sale” and you will be whisked off to a cornucopia of choices. Even though you it would be easy to choose who you want to build your cabin. The difficult part is choosing what you want inside it. Like a house, you can’t exactly choose the framing of the building. What you can choose is what covers it. With options from wooden logs, for a true log cabin feel, to vinyl or aluminum siding to protect you from the elements of nature. With logs you do have re-stain and treat the wood. With vinyl and aluminum siding you will have to choose your color and make sure maintenance and cleaning are up-kept. We understand for the exterior we don’t always get very many options. The interior, however, is a horse of a different color so to speak. From choosing the floor plan to picking what kind and color of cabinets to have hung. There are a wide variety of things to choose from. Even having electricity and plumbing are completely optional.

Cost Difference

There is, at times, a big difference in the cost of purchasing a portable cabin or purchasing a stationary home. In 2010 the average home in America ranged between $ 221,000 and $272,000. Some even reaching well above $300,000. For a portable cabin, the average cost is a fraction of that of an actual home. As of June 2010, research shows the average cost of a portable cabin, or home, ranging between $59,800 to $76,300. Of course, like almost anything else, the cost depends on your location. For example, the average in the Midwest was $63,300. While in the north east the cost was $67,400. This is true to stationary homes as well, but due to the nature of a portable cabin the cost is exponentially less. We take cost into thought every time we intend on making any kind of purchase. Especially one that could reach well over tens of thousands of dollars. Also, like a regular house, the cost varies depending on the options you choose. Some people choosing to look into portable cabins for sale are looking for their home away from home. The perfect get away paradise so to speak. So, choosing the inessential pieces can be a walk in the park. But, certain upgrades might be out of the question due to size, weight, or other similar variables. For example, you’re not exactly going to be able to get a counter top over six feet long and weighing over 250 pounds. Some things will need to be taken into consideration because of the material used to construct the module. Due to size limitations of the portable cabin you aren’t going to be able to add certain extra’s. Like the kitchen can’t have an island or the bathroom can’t exactly have a huge Jacuzzi tub with all the little extra jets. But you are able to have certain things like a wall to wall full walk-in closet or the style of bed you want. Just like with a regular home, the cost is going to reflect the extra odds and ends you do choose to add. There will be a difference in cost on the extra’s as well though. On average a home owner chooses granite counter tops or antique finish cabinets, but they usually pay full price because of the size being ordered and usually ordering a large size can be seen in the price. However, the cost of the same material for a portable cabin is, by far, lower than that of its larger counter-part. A large section “regular” counter top, or even a faux granite counter top, can run upwards over $30,000 or even $40,000 just for the top. Yes, this varies depending on the area you choose to get the products from as well. But, the same counter for a portable cabin will be exponentially less because of the size difference as well as the manufacturer.

Benefits of a Portable Cabin

Not many people can think of a down side when it comes to your home away from home. And for good reason. Because there aren’t any. The list of benefits in choosing a portable cabin over a regular house can stretch for miles. One reason seems to stand out to me more than any others. I ask you one simple question. If you decide you want a different location, can you just pick everything up out of your house and go? The answer is no, no for both a portable cabin and a house. But, there is a way to make it work. With a portable cabin you have the option of disconnecting the plumbing, heating, water, and electricity. Once everything is disconnected you can contract a company to come pick up your portable cabin and move it to where you want to be. The only “headache” you have to deal with is where you want to go. After you decide where, you need to set a base, and of course legalities but those come with any type of project like this. Once the base is set, you are then able to make sure you have all of utilities connected and you’re done. With a regular house, you don’t have such a simple option. You have to list the home you’re in and wait for its time on the market. You have so many more hoops to jump through before finally being able to leave. Then you need to find your new place. If you planned ahead, you would have multi-tasked and found your new home before you left the old one. From the seams of things doing all the extra work, like selling the home before moving on to a new home. I would, personally, rather get the portable cabin.
